Important Partner Updates - August 2020

Dear Partners,

The last five months have presented Food Bank of the Rockies and your programs with a perfect storm. And the headwinds have been strong: a global health crisis, a racial equity time of reckoning, and a food crisis unlike anything we've seen since the Great Depression.

When COVID-19 hit, we quickly ramped up food distributions and tripled our monthly food purchasing, thinking this would be a three- to six-month response operation. Now, at five months in and no end in sight, we're shifting our mindset to long-term and sustainable despite our trepidation about our continued reliance on volunteers and our operating budget which has grown by 50% as a result of our COVID response work.

What you, our partners, have made possible during this critical time is nothing short of remarkable. Together, we're distributing enough food for nearly 300,000 meals a day, to many new people, as well as those who were already facing hard times.

We are now distributing 90% more food than in mid-March. We've added drivers, warehouse staff, a night shift, and an additional facility. We have said "yes" to dozens of new partnerships as we find creative ways to serve kids, older adults, and many people who have never previously needed help with food. And we are doing so with an evolving equity lens on our operations and partnerships. I hope you are as proud as I am to be part of Food Bank of the Rockies during this time of unprecedented need. Together, we have accomplished so much. And there’s more work to be done.

As we look toward the future, we do so with an unwavering commitment that we will be here for as long as it takes. And we have faith that you'll continue to be here right alongside us, ensuring that these unprecedented needs are matched by our unprecedented work.

This crisis has made us focus on what matters most - who we're serving and who is making it possible. On behalf of our dedicated staff team and our strategic board of directors, we thank all of you for extending your goodwill by serving your community during this tremendous time of need. Thanks to you, we're facing this storm head-on and bracing for those continued, strong headwinds. For we know that we are stronger together.

Sincerely,

Colorado families who are eligible for free or reduced price child meal programs can receive Pandemic EBT (P-EBT) assistance.
Colorado families with school-aged children qualified for free or reduced-price school meals from schools that participate in the National School Lunch Program can get up to $279 per child per month in food benefits. Check here for your child's school. P-EBT is available to all eligible families regardless of immigration status; the Public Charge rule does NOT apply.

Most of the families who already received SNAP during March, April, and May need not take any extra steps to apply for P-EBT. Benefits will be added to their accounts. Families who did not receive SNAP benefits during that time are encouraged to apply online.

Corn-Harvest-2020

Annual Fort Morgan corn harvest event carries on.
The 9th annual Kosman/Postovit corn harvest for Food Bank of the Rockies took place in Fort Morgan on Saturday, August 8. Friends and Fort Morgan corn farmers, Bruce Postovit and Mike Kosman started the event in 2012 to help families in need. Each year, the Kosman family plants several acres of sweet corn specifically to donate to Food Bank of the Rockies. After Mike died several years ago, his family and friends continue the tradition in his memory. While COVID-19 changed this year’s plans, the team was determined to harvest and donate the same amount of sweet corn. The generous effort by all resulted in more than 70,000 ears of sweet corn harvested! Food Bank of the Rockies received 30,000 pounds of fresh corn to distribute to our community. We are overwhelmed by this labor of love to get delicious corn to neighbors in need. Thank you to all who made this year’s event possible!

Move for Hunger helps partners with the heavy lifting.
Move for Hunger, a non-profit organization, connects available trucking companies throughout the United States with food banks in need of moving assistance. They can move dry goods, equipment, or offer a complete relocation. Homeward Bound in Grand Junction recently used Move for Hunger to assist in their move from one site to another. If your program needs moving assistance, Move for Hunger offers this service at no cost. Reach out to Hannah to learn more.

We're looking for sites for fall after-school meals.
In order to keep community members safe during COVID-19, there are many different food options available, including fresh grab-n-go and shelf-stable meals; we also have the ability to distribute multiple meals at once and have parents pick up. These options have been extended until June 30, 2021. Check with Brandy to see if your program is eligible to participate. And hurry, as slots are filling up fast!

Find a children's feeding program in your community.
For kids and teens 18 & under, text "FOOD" or "COMIDA" to 877-877 to locate nearby sites.

Ready to restart your Totes of Hope® program for the school year?
Totes of Hope is our weekend food program for children. To restart your Totes of Hope program or add a site, please reach out to Guillermo to learn more.

Food Bank of the Rockies supports kosher meals.
Nutrition Network partners with Yeshiva Toras Chaim to support their kosher meal program. The site provides 400 kosher breakfasts and lunches each week to their students.

"With the pandemic creating havoc around the world, the concept of the USDA summer camp program was discussed as an avenue to help children in need in the Jewish community with kosher meals. We have been running the program for six weeks and have averaged 450 children per week. It is an accomplishment that we could never have reached without the genuine support and enthusiasm of Food Bank of the Rockies!

We can't thank you all enough for your wonderful partnership, which has enabled us to serve so many children and make such a positive impact on them and their families in these very challenging COVID-19 times."

- Rabbi Chaim Abrams

Impacting Kids in June
Our Nutrition Network distributed 62,454 meals, 51,494 totes, and served more than 13,315 children.
